Energy and Waste Management

We have a network of 43 recycling, composting and waste management facilities across Greater Manchester. These facilities deal with 1.1 million tonnes of waste produced each year, from over 1 million households in Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford.

GMWDA is using the latest technologies to treat and process waste and recycling. The EU Landfill Directive and national recycling targets are the main drivers for encouraging waste companies and local authorities to consider alternative technologies.  There are economic reasons as well as regulatory objectives for reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. Landfill tax from April 1 2017 is £86.10 per tonne. This will then remain at least at this level until 2020.

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Cllr Catherine Piddington, the longest serving Member of the GMWDA & a former chair. She will be remembered for her forthright views & commitment to behavioural change. Thoughts & sympathies go out to her family & friends pic.twitter.com/wxuDayfViy
