Entwisle Road Closure
What is happening?
Entwisle Road’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) closed to the public on 13th January 2008.
Having seen the levels of recycling increase by 300% in areas where alternate weekly collections have been introduced, Rochdale Council have decided to continue the roll out of the scheme to all households. The move will help Rochdale to achieve their target of recycling 40% of the borough’s waste by 2010 and avoid the payment of hefty landfill taxes and charges.
The Rochdale Township in which Entwisle Road HWRC is located, moved to alternate weekly collections on January 31st 2008. These changes mean an alternate weekly collection with recyclable materials being collected one week and residual waste the next. The improved recycling services mean that there is the opportunity to recycle:
- glass bottles and jars;
- plastic bottles;
- food and drink cans; plus
- paper and cardboard products including shredded paper, envelopes and yellow pages, from the kerbside.
Due to these improvements in collection services, a facility near to where the recyclable materials are being collected needs to be available to ‘bulk’ these materials so that they can then be transported on for processing in reasonable sized loads. This makes the process as economically sound as possible and also cuts down on unnecessary journeys and the effects that these extra trips would have on the environment.
What other facilities are available to me for recycling and disposing of waste?
The enhanced household collection services will mean that local residents will be able to recycle much more from the kerbside. The nearby HWRC at Waithlands on Chichester Street, Rochdale, OL16 2AU (Tel: 01706 643 871) will also continue service as normal (for residents with vehicles under 5’9”) with improvements planned for the future. The future improvements at the HWRC facility at Waithlands will be extended to allow for: a larger storage capacity, more convenient site layout and better traffic access. These improvements will reduce waiting times and provide a more comprehensive recycling service for local residents.
For those residents travelling in vehicles over 5’9”, alternative facilities are provided on behalf of GMWDA at the following nearby sites:
- Bury (Transfer Loading Station), Every Street, Fernhill, Bury, BL9 5BE (Tel: 0161 705 1125)
- North Manchester (Material Recovery Facility), Reliance Street, Newton Heath, Manchester, M40 3EZ (Tel: 0161 688 5611)
There are also recycling facilities at places such as supermarkets across the borough. To locate your nearest recycling facilities, please visit www.recycleforgreatermanchester.com and enter your postcode in the Where Can I Recycle? section.
