7 Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) are undergoing major refurbishment or are new developments and can be found at Raikes Lane in Bolton; Every Street in Bury, Arkwright Street in Oldham, Chichester Street in Rochdale; Cobden Street in Salford; Bayley Street in Tameside and Bredbury Parkway in Stockport.
The TLS at each facility will receive a variety of waste materials and prepare them to be transferred to other facilities in large wagons. TLSs will receive waste from their local surrounding area so that efficiencies can be made by bulking up the material into larger loads for onward travel, to the main Mechanical Biological Treatment facilities (MBT) and Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).
The TLS can either receive recyclable materials from kerbside and household collections or residual waste, which cannot be recycled. Refuse or recycling vehicles deposit materials at purpose built facilities, which are enclosed and carefully regulated to ensure that noise, dust and odours are contained.
After deposition, these materials undergo a process known as ‘bulking’ − where the materials are stored until there is a large enough volume of material for transfer. All Transfer Loading Stations operate on the principle of bulking waste deliveries in
the order they were deposited on the site, to ensure waste is not stored for prolonged periods.
Recyclable materials − such as mixed paper and card − are sent to reprocessors to be made into new materials, while other waste is sent for further treatment or disposal.
