The Environmental Aftercare Team

The Aftercare Team manage and support the infrastructure of the sites and monitor the boreholes for landfill gas. There are also a number of deep shafts and culverted watercourses that require regular surveying and maintenance works.  This important role ensures the landfill sites pose no threat to human health and the environment.

Managing the Leachate

Leachate is the liquid that drains or 'leaches' from a landfill and contains dissolved methane. Leachate pollution is prevented by either pumping from within the landfill (de-watering) or by collection via a perimeter drainage system. Leachate from the landfill is treated in a Methane Stripping Plant prior to being pumped to the sewer and complies with statutory requirement.

There are currently 8 Methane Stripping Plants owned and managed by GMWDA
