Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs)
| |
|
The network of Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in Greater Manchester are here for you to take both large and small items to be recycled for example, garden waste, wood, metal, soil and rubble, white goods such as washing machines and fridges – you can also take your small items like newspapers and magazines, glass bottles and jars and food and drink cans.
At each of the HWRCs there are a number of containers for a variety of materials. You will be asked to separate the items you bring and place them into the different recycling containers so that materials can be recycled.
There has been a vast amount of re-development work happening at the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). We are changing residents' perceptions of recycling and dispelling myths about what happens to Greater Manchester's waste. We are widely promoting the benefits of using the HWRCs. To find out what is happening in your area please visit our Services and Facilities page.

Hard Plastics
16 Recycling Centres are now collected HARD plastics for recycling on a 6 month trial. The Centres where you can take your HARD plastic to are listed in the Household Waste Recycling Centre index above.
What is HARD plastic?
HARD plastic is any plastic that doesn’t bend, the plastic is rigid in structure. Items made out of HARD plastic
include:
•Milk and beer crates
•Wheelie bins
•Packing crates
•Car bumpers
•Children’s toys and games
•Pipes
•Buckets and other hard plastic containers
•Plastic garden furniture
Not sure if your item is HARD plastic ask a member of staff at the Household Waste Recycling Centre they will be more than happy to help.
Please note: Plastics with small amounts of surface contamination are acceptable, heavy soiling with such substances as mud, cement, paint or adhesive should be excluded.
IMPORTANT
SAFE DISPOSAL OF ASBESTOS
we can no longer accept unwrapped asbestos, residents will need to bring any household asbestos to our facilities wrapped up in heavy duty plastic wrapping — you can use household rubble sacks that can be bought from super markets.
Asbestos can be taken to all our HWRCs apart from Blackhorse (Bolton). For hints and tips on safe removal of asbestos visit: www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos.
HWRC Closures
At its Annual General Meeting on the 17th June 2011 the decision to close 6 of their HWRCS has been approved as part of their budget cuts.
The rationalisation will take place in two phases; phase one: The four Household Waste Recycling Centres below have now closed:
• Chandos Street, Shaw, Oldham
• Clifton Road, Prestwich, Bury
• Peel Lane, Heywood, Rochdale
• Union Road, Bolton
Phase two will involve developing a new super site at the former CMP Batteries site (Salford Road, Over Hulton Bolton BL5 1DD) and subsequently will involve closing Lester Road, Salford and Blackhorse Street, Blackrod, Bolton. The date for this is yet to be finalised.
Please read the FAQs for further information
All HWRCs have a height barrier of 2 metres (approx 6ft 6inches)
