Environment Commission
The Environment Commission is the function of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) responsible for protecting and improving environmental quality in the administrative area.
Recently, Greater Manchester has been awarded ‘City Region’ status which means it now has formal independent decision making powers over specific areas like the environment, where it will have the ability to develop strategies and direct resources.
Already, the Environment Commission has developed a number of key priorities for action including the development of the Climate Change Agency, and Climate Change Strategy as well as ensuring that the region’s economic growth is resilient to climate, regulatory, environmental, market and demographic measures.
Pertinently, in the area of waste management the Environment Commission is working closely with Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority to develop a comprehensive sustainable waste management approach that encompasses commercial, industrial and commercial and construction and demolition waste. The emerging strategy recognises that waste management technologies are material specific and therefore there are opportunities to build synergies in treatment across waste streams, where the same materials arise in different waste streams.
