Greater Manchester Comes Highly Commended
The Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) and the nine districts it works in partnership with, have come Highly Commended at the Valpak Awards 2007. The Awards took place on Tuesday at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, when the Greater Manchester partnership was just ‘pipped at the post’ from coming first in the Best Partnership category by Nestle.

The Awards have been designed to recognise the organisations which have implemented the best or most innovative packaging recycling and waste minimisation programme. They also acknowledge the organisations that have pushed the education and awareness of recycling. The Best Partnership award recognises the most successful partnership between a diverse range of organisations to deliver a recycling service, an investment, a research project or change which has brought about more packaging to be recycled.
"Valpak was impressed by the quality and standard of all the award entries. Partnership projects are always complicated and hard work to set up," said Duncan Simpson, Director of Marketing at Valpak. "We think the Greater Manchester project deserved its commendation and is an excellent example of partnership working which is really delivering results."
GMWDA member Councillor Chris Gordon, who was in attendance at the awards on behalf of the Authority, commented:
“We were delighted to come highly commended in the Best Partnership category. It is fantastic to see that all the hard work both between the GMWDA and the nine collection authorities, and also by the householders of Greater Manchester is being recognised. This commendation has been made possible by the great effort that is being made across the conurbation to increase recycling levels and these will only get better once the new ‘world class’ treatment facilities which are proposed for Greater Manchester are in place.”
