This month local residents have access to a new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) allowing them to recycle household waste including bulky items in a modern easy to use facility.
The HWRC at Boysnope Wharf has been under construction since August 2009 and opened its gates to local residents over a month earlier than planned.
The new HWRC will provide site users will the following facilities in a modern and easy to use facility:
• Easy access to the recycling containers which are situated on one level specifically designated for members of the public
• A modern, convenient site layout
• A comprehensive recycling service for local residents
• Better traffic management to eliminate queuing off-site
• Separate access for operational vehicles and private cars to increase the safety of all site users
Peter Heginbotham, Chairman of VLGM, the company responsible for the development, said “This new facility with its modern and forward thinking layout will make it easier for residents to segregate and recycle more of their waste in a simple to use and safe environment.”
VLGM and Salford City Council Highways Authority wanted to be confident that the users of the A57 would not experience any negative effects from this new facility, working together and surveying the volume and movement of traffic on the highway a high quality traffic management plan was developed and implemented for the adjacent roundabout that joins the A57 and the B5320. The introduction of traffic signals at the roundabout, together with specific site features to allow for ample off-road queuing that can be used in busy periods when the facility experiences high numbers of users, will ensure a positive improvement to the traffic flow on the A57.
The introduction of the traffic signals has been completed at the roundabout and local users are already benefiting from the system.
Councillor Neil Swannick, Chair of GMWDA said “The £631 million construction programme across Greater Manchester is progressing well and we are pleased with the progress that has been made both with this site and the many others that are being constructed or redeveloped by Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Limited. Residents are already starting to benefit from the new facilities as they are finished and satisfaction levels are very high".
Councillor Joe Murphy from GMWDA and Salford City Council’s Lead Member for Environment said “ “This new and upgraded facility is a community facility and will allow Salford residents to further increase their local recycling performance by providing a wider range of segregated recycling containers so users can recycle more household items more often. The HWRC at Boysnope Wharf has specifically been designed to allow for at least 60% recycling of all the household waste taken into the site.”
This new development forms part of the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority’s long-term recycling and waste management contract to provide world class waste and recycling facilities across Greater Manchester. This new facility will be one element of a fully integrated waste management strategy, providing a range of new infrastructures and services to boost recycling and recovery in order to meet government recycling targets.
