Environmental Improvements To Your Area
Hardman Fold Closed Landfill Site - Failsworth
Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) recently submitted a planning application to Oldham Council to build a Methane Stripping Plant on Hardman Fold Landfill site, Failsworth. In response to residents’ concerns this has since been withdrawn to allow more time for public consultation and will be re-submitted in the next few weeks.
We have consulted and listened to local Councillors and residents’ groups and we have helped allay their concerns about noise, odour and traffic flows and given reassurances that the plant would bring significant environmental benefits to the area. However they asked for more time for consultation and we have been pleased to help.
Why is it Needed?
To make much needed and significant environmental improvements to the site and help clean up Moston Brook.
Landfill sites produce ‘leachate’. This is the dirty water that drains or ‘leaches’ from a landfill and contains dissolved methane. It is collected through a network of underground pipes and discharged into the sewer system. The existing system is old and needs improving to prevent leachate seeping into Moston Brook. The level of dissolved methane discharged to the sewer also needs reducing to comply with regulations to prevent a build up of methane in the sewer system, which could pose a potential hazard. This is best achieved by treating the leachate using a methane stripping plant.
The plants:
- Are safe and secure
- Produce negligible noise and odour
- Take up little space and are largely hidden by landscaping and planting
- There are no site traffic flows. The plant will require only routine maintenance and cleaning
- Environmental impacts are negligible
